Proxy manager refers to two different tool types:
- Reverse-proxy managers route inbound traffic to self-hosted services and handle SSL. Nginx Proxy Manager is the most common example.
- Forward-proxy switchers and managers route outbound traffic through proxy IPs, and include browser extensions, desktop apps, and provider-side managers used for web scraping.

How we selected these tools
Tools were included based on:
- Active maintenance (recent releases or commits within the past 12 months)
- Public protocol and platform documentation
Pricing and protocol support change frequently; verify the vendor page before purchase.
Reverse-proxy managers (self-hosted)
These tools sit in front of services you host and route inbound requests to them. They do not provide proxy IPs.
Nginx Proxy Manager
Nginx Proxy Manager (NPM) is an open-source (MIT) web interface for managing Nginx as a reverse proxy. It runs as a Docker container and exposes a dashboard for proxy hosts, redirects, TCP/UDP streams, and 404 hosts. The current stable release is v2.14.0; TOTP two-factor authentication was added in 2.13.6.
NPM is not a proxy provider and does not supply proxy IPs. It manages traffic to services you already run.
Forward-proxy switchers & managers
These tools route your outbound traffic through proxy IPs. Browser extensions affect browser traffic; desktop apps can route system-wide traffic; provider managers add rotation and routing on top of a proxy network.
Bright Data
Bright Data offers an open-source proxy manager that works with all Bright Data products, including their proxies and Scraper APIs. The tool is compatible with all major operating systems and can also be accessed in the cloud. You can access detailed request logs, customize IP rotation for available proxy services, and configure the SOCKS5 protocol.
The Proxy Manager allows you to set up rules that control when and how proxies are switched, based on criteria such as pricing, response time, or other custom conditions.
Bright Data’s proxy manager streamlines multi-country proxy management by enabling users to use IPs from multiple countries without requiring a separate proxy port for each. Instead, the proxy manager enables you to dynamically specify the desired country at request time, either through configuration or code, while using a single proxy port.
The provider offers a free trial that includes a $2 credit upon signing up and an additional $5 credit when you add a payment method.
Oxylabs
Oxy Proxy Manager is a good choice for users requiring residential proxy pools. The Chrome extension provides a “one-click” connection and is specifically optimized to prevent WebRTC leaks.
It is a free tool that allows users to manage proxies on their desktop and mobile devices. The tool supports the HTTP(S) protocol. You can use the tool with any proxy provider you choose.
IPRoyal
IPRoyal proxy manager is a free Google Chrome and Firefox extension that allows users to manage and switch between multiple proxies directly from their browsers. It supports various proxy protocols, including HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP.
IPRoyal proxy manager allows users to create and manage multiple proxy profiles, including the IP address, port, and protocol. You can use your single-proxy profile for all browser traffic.
SwitchyOmega
SwitchyOmega is a good choice for users who frequently need to switch between multiple proxy providers. It is a browser-based proxy management tool.
Unlike more technical tools, SwitchyOmega uses a color-coded system. The tool supports HTTP, HTTPS, SOCKS4, and SOCKS5. There is an Auto-Switch mode that intelligently selects the appropriate proxy for each website based on your predefined rules.
FoxyProxy
FoxyProxy is open source and supports complex URL pattern matching. You can set it to use a US proxy only for specific streaming sites while browsing everything else on your local IP.
It is a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that enables users to switch between tabs quickly and easily. The tool features a user-friendly interface, including color-coded proxy profiles and country flags, making it easy to navigate.
It can be used on any operating system, including Windows, macOS, and Linux. However, there is currently no FoxyProxy extension available for Safari. There are two versions of the extension (standard and basic), both of which are free.
Proxifier
Proxifier is available for Windows and macOS, and there is also a version for Android devices. Proxifier is not an open-source tool. A single-user license for Proxifier Standard Edition costs $39.95.
Proxifier also provides a free 31-day trial period with no feature limitations. Proxifier’s rules are system-wide, and you can filter by application executable or destination IP/hostname.
Zyte
Zyte Smart Proxy management tool can integrate with web scraping tools and libraries, including Puppeteer, Selenium, and Playwright. The tool is designed specifically for data extraction projects. The proxy manager supports residential IP addresses.
FAQs
Yes, FoxyProxy is completely open-source and free for both Chrome and Firefox. It remains one of the most transparent tools for privacy-conscious users.
A proxy manager is software designed to control, manage, and monitor proxy servers. It allows users to apply custom configurations and integrate with other systems via APIs to manage large-scale proxy operations.
