Prolific overview
Prolific operates a crowdsourcing platform that connects researchers and AI teams with a vetted pool of participants. Unlike open marketplaces, Prolific controls who enters its pool; each new participant now completes 50+ identity and behavioral checks, with only 55% of applicants accepted. Ongoing verification includes periodic video selfie checks and real-time behavioral monitoring during studies. 1
Services:
- Human-generated datasets for AI training and evaluation
- AI/ML model evaluation
- Reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF)
- Academic and market research surveys
- Verified domain expert access (healthcare, STEM, legal, programming)
Crowd size: 200,000+ active verified participants across 38+ countries and 80+ languages.2
Prolific launched HUMAINE a human-centered AI model leaderboard that evaluates frontier models based on real participant feedback across helpfulness, trust, communication, adaptiveness, and cultural alignment. The initial evaluation involved 27,000+ participants across 22 demographic groups and 29 models. The leaderboard is available on Hugging Face and updated as new models are added. 3 This positions Prolific not just as a data collection platform but as an evaluation infrastructure for AI labs.
Pros:
- Tightly vetted participants produce more reliable data than open marketplaces
- 50+ verification checks at onboarding, ongoing video identity confirmation
- Minimum compensation rate of $8.00/£6.00 per hour enforced across all studies4
- 300+ demographic filters for precise participant targeting
- Complete datasets are typically returned within two hours
Cons:
- A crowd of 200,000+ is smaller than LXT (7 million+) and Appen limits throughput for very large-scale projects
- Most customer reviews focus on research use cases; AI training data adoption appears lower than that of competitors
- Limited ability to set highly customized geographic and demographic quotas in some configurations
Prolific alternatives overview for customers
Here, we provide an overview of the three alternatives mentioned in this article.
LXT completed its Clickworker integration on July 31, 2025, creating the largest crowd network among the vendors compared here. The unified platform covers 150+ countries and 1,000+ language locales broader than any of the alternatives in this article.5
Services: Data collection and annotation across text, image, video, audio, and speech; custom model fine-tuning; RLHF and prompt creation; rating and ranking; SEO content and web research.
Pricing: Depends on whether you use the self-service platform (client-managed, lower cost) or the fully managed model, where LXT provides project management.
What customers report: Crowd is described as reliable, and the platform is easy to use. Some clients find image annotation pricing high. LXT publishes demographic, gender, education, and language coverage data for its crowd, a level of transparency that Prolific and Appen do not currently match.
Appen covers the broadest range of languages (265 languages, 170 countries) and offers a long-standing managed data service for large-scale AI projects.
- Services: Data collection and generation across image, video, text, audio, and speech; data annotation; data validation.
- What customers report: Platform reliability has been a recurring concern as Appen’s financials have deteriorated. Over 80% of revenue comes from its top five clients, so smaller projects are unlikely to receive priority. Server stability issues have been noted in customer reviews.
MTurk suits high-volume, low-complexity tasks at low cost. You post tasks and workers self-select into them. There is no intake vetting comparable to Prolific.
- Services: Data collection, annotation and labeling, surveys, content moderation, and general microtasks.
- Pricing: Requester sets the per-task pay. Amazon charges 20% on worker pay plus 20% for tasks with 10+ assignments, and 5% for Master ‘s-qualified workers.
- What customers report: Scalable for large volumes. The active crowd is estimated at approximately 100,000 workers despite the platform citing 500,000+ registered accounts. A study found 33–46% of MTurk workers use large language models for text production tasks, a material data quality concern for clients building AI training sets that require genuine human responses.6

MTurk pros and cons
- MTurk has a larger pool of workers than Prolific.
- Customers noted that most workers on MTurk’s platform are not fluent in English. This can cause issues for clients who require human-generated English speech or text data.
- While MTurk’s services are efficient, its Master qualification (5% more expensive than regular workers) does not offer higher-quality work.
