We reviewed 40 real chatbot applications across industries to see what actually delivers results versus what’s just marketing hype.
Customer support applications
1. Handling queries and complaints
Amazon’s support bot processes millions of queries daily. It handles straightforward issues (tracking numbers, delivery dates) and escalates anything involving money or complex problems. The bot also asks “Did this help?” after each interaction, feeding data back to improve responses.1
2. Instant answers for common questions
Natural language processing allows bots to understand questions phrased differently. “Where’s my order?” “When will it arrive?” “Shipping status?” All resolve to the same tracking lookup.
3. Basic information delivery
IKEA’s bot tells you store locations, opening times, and whether specific items are in stock. Before the bot, customers called stores directly, tying up phone lines for questions that took 10 seconds to answer.
After the bot launched, call volume dropped 30% for basic inquiries. Staff now spend more time helping customers in-store.2
4. Supporting human agents
Allstate Business Insurance Expert (ABIe) assists 12,000 insurance agents. Agents ask ABIe about policy details, pricing, and coverage options. The bot surfaces information from massive databases faster than agents can search manually.3
5. Billing alerts
AT&T’s billing bot messages customers three days before payment is due and again on the due date if the payment is unpaid. Late payments dropped 25% after deployment, not because customers changed behavior, but because they stopped forgetting.4
Sales & marketing applications
6. Product recommendations
Spotify’s Prompted Playlists allows users to describe in detail what they want to hear using natural language, for example, a full sentence like “Find me one artist I haven’t heard but would probably love, focused on 2000s indie.” The AI DJ also accepts text requests in English and Spanish, in addition to voice commands.5
7. Discount offers
Sephora’s bot analyzes how long you’ve been looking at a product and whether you’ve visited before. First-time browsers get welcomed. Return visitors who added items to their cart get a 10% discount code.6
8. Preventing churn
Netflix’s retention bot notices when you haven’t watched anything in 2+ weeks. Instead of waiting for you to cancel, it sends personalized show recommendations based on your history.7
Lead qualification applications
9. Automotive sales
Toyota’s bot asks qualifying questions upfront to avoid spending hours on unqualified leads:
- Budget range?
- New or used?
- Trade-in?
- Preferred contact method?
Sales staff get leads that match available inventory and have realistic budgets. Test drive scheduling happens automatically for qualified leads.8
10. Education
Studera.ai lets teachers and students create custom AI chatbots using their own documents and texts or use ready-made chatbots for subjects like math, history, and languages. Users can ask questions, practice languages through role-play, customize chatbot responses, and share chatbots or conversations.9
11. Real estate
Zillow’s bot pre-screens by asking:
- Buying timeline? (Next month, 6 months, just browsing)
- Pre-approved for a mortgage?
- Preferred neighborhoods?
- Must-have features?
Realtors prioritize leads marked “pre-approved, buying within 90 days” over those marked “exploring options, no timeline.”10
12. Replenishment reminders
Chewy (pet supplies) messages customers when purchase history suggests they’re running low on food or medication. “Your usual order of X is due for reorder. Want to schedule delivery?”
This works because timing is predictable. A 30-pound bag of dog food lasts roughly 6 weeks. The bot messages at week 5.11
13. Win-back campaigns
Uber Eats identifies users who haven’t ordered in 30+ days and offers a discount. The bot personalizes based on past orders: “We miss you! Here’s 20% off your favorite Thai restaurant.”12
Healthcare applications
14. Insurance coverage questions
HealthJoy’s bot answers coverage questions in plain language:
- “Am I covered for physical therapy?”
- “What’s my copay for urgent care?”
- “Is this doctor in-network?”
The bot pulls from your specific plan, so answers are personalized. Beats spending 45 minutes on hold with insurance companies.13
15. Symptom assessment
OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health, a dedicated space where users can optionally connect medical records and wellness apps including Apple Health, MyFitnessPal and Peloton to get tailored responses, lab test insights and nutrition guidance.14Health conversations, files and connected apps are stored separately from a user’s other chats and are not used to train OpenAI’s foundation models.
It differs from general-purpose symptom checkers by integrating directly with personal health records rather than relying solely on user-reported symptoms.
Ada Health asks about symptoms, duration, and severity.15Based on responses, it suggests:
- Self-care at home
- Urgent care visit within 24 hours
- Emergency room immediately
16. Mental health support
Talkspace announced Tee, its consumer-facing AI mental health agent. The underlying model was fine-tuned on hundreds of millions of tokens drawn from anonymised and clinically graded Talkspace therapy transcripts, and in testing against general-purpose models without specialised fine-tuning it delivered a 50% improvement in identifying and responding to high-risk behaviours and a 47% higher therapeutic quality score on the cognitive therapy rating scale.16
Conversations are monitored for risk indicators including suicidal ideation, mania, delusion, and disordered eating, and flagged exchanges are escalated to a human clinician who decides whether to intervene.17
17. Health tracking
MyFitnessPal’s bot messages you:
- “You’re 500 calories below target today. Need meal suggestions?”
- “You logged 3 gym sessions this week: On track for your goal!”
- “Medication reminder: Take your allergy pill”
The bot turns passive tracking into active engagement.18
E-Commerce applications
18. Conversational shopping
H&M runs a generative-AI virtual assistant built on Google Cloud Dialogflow that recognizes dozens of languages and handles everything from order tracking to mix-and-match outfit suggestions, with sentiment analysis routing frustrated shoppers to live agents.19
Amazon took the idea further by folding its Rufus shopping assistant into Alexa for Shopping so conversations and preferences flow both across the Amazon app, website, and Echo devices, and the assistant gets more personal over time. Amazon said Rufus had helped more than 300 million customers research.20
19. Price drop alert
CamelCamelCamel (for Amazon) tracks price history and alerts when items hit your target price. Set it to “notify me when this drops below $50” and forget about it.21
20. Order tracking
Tars connects natively to Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento and BigCommerce for storefront, catalog and order data, so customers asking “where’s order #12345?” get real-time tracking without human involvement, while damaged shipments and charge disputes escalate with the full transcript and order history attached.22
Zendesk introduced specialized AI agents that package commerce work as vertical capabilities, shopping assistance, order management, returns and exchanges, delivery issue resolution and refunds, connecting to systems including Shopify, Narvar, Stripe and Riskified so the agent can retrieve information and take action without moving between tools. Zendesk says these agents can automate up to 80% of such workflows, and offers both pre-configured industry agents and custom agents built in a no-code Agent Builder.23
21. Social commerce
Nike’s Facebook Messenger bot lets you browse, ask questions, and purchase (product photos, sizing info, and checkout) entirely within Messenger.24
Shopify positions Sidekick as a merchant-facing AI assistant built into the admin that writes product descriptions, analyzes pricing, generates performance summaries, and surfaces high-impact tasks using a store’s own data.25
Shopify’s Agentic Storefronts make product catalogs natively discoverable to autonomous shopping agents inside ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity, giving merchants control over how their brand is presented in those conversations.
Shopify reported that in the first quarter of 2026, AI-referred visitors converted at nearly 50% higher rates than organic search, with average order values 14% higher. The same data shows AI-referred conversion beating organic SEO in 23 of 25 merchant categories, which is why these tools mark a shift from purely consumer-facing chatbots toward merchant-side automation of catalog data and storefront optimization for algorithmic buyers.26
22. Subscription changes
Retail assistants are increasingly built on persistent agent memory rather than treating each interaction as isolated. Open-source memory layers such as Vectorize’s Hindsight extract facts from each conversation, link entities in a knowledge graph, and run semantic, keyword, graph, and temporal searches in parallel to recall them later.27
Travel applications
23. Booking assistance
Expedia’s virtual assistant lets travelers describe the trip they want in their own words, turning open-ended ideas into a personalized, bookable itinerary of local activities and attractions. 28
24. Itinerary planning

25. Restaurant reservations
OpenTable’s bot is an open-source automation tool that helps users secure reservations at popular restaurants through OpenTable. Users can search for events by location, interests, and categories, receive personalized recommendations, and register or purchase tickets directly through the platform.

Financial applications
28. Robo-advisors

29. Loan applications
Kasisto’s KAI, a part of Backbase, checks pre-qualification, explains loan terms and tracks application status, so instead of filling out 30 form fields, you answer questions one at a time.

Agents work through a dedicated account and MCP server, can rebalance portfolios, place limit orders on dips and schedule recurring buys, and operate inside isolated portfolios with spending caps and trade limits.
Entertainment applications
31. Personalized news

32. Audience polling
Netflix Real-Time Voting is an interactive feature that lets viewers vote during selected live events and podcasts directly through the Netflix app. When voting opens, viewers see an on-screen prompt with multiple options and a limited time to submit their choice.

37. Task management
Slackbot is an AI assistant built into Slack that helps employees find information, automate tasks, and manage work using natural language. It searches Slack conversations, shared files, connected applications, and the web to answer questions, summarize discussions, and retrieve relevant information with source citations.

It can also create reusable workflows, automate recurring tasks, prepare meeting summaries, and update records in connected systems such as Salesforce, Jira, and other business applications.42
38. Customer service training
SweetRush and Hilton developed an AI-powered immersive training program that combines generative AI with WebXR technology, allowing employees to practice handling realistic guest complaints in a virtual hotel environment.
Employees interact with virtual guests in scenarios involving room problems, missing amenities, and food service issues. Hi there! You guys left a comment that begins almost exactly like this at https://aimultiple.com/chatbot-success/. Looks like bots are writing comments. I would expect your bot to be more creative or at least to have filters such that it did not leave the same comments via different users on the same website.
